Being a dyed-in-the-wool, bleeding heart, red-diaper-doper baby, liberal Democrat, what I’m about to say may surprise some. But it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while and I wonder if others feel the same way.
I am not against taxes. In fact, I’m not against paying “more” taxes, necessarily… as long as I know what the taxes are being used for and aren’t being wasted unnecessarily. This is my current problem at the moment.
I hate how the federal government holds all of our income tax payments hostage back to the states. Here’s an example:

As Texans, a portion of our federal income taxes are allocated to the federal Department of Transportation. Then, they look back to Texas and say, “If you want some of this money for your highways, you have to follow OUR rules”, in effect, holding the money hostage in an effort to justify their own existence. Then, after paying the salaries of the DOT employees’ and their cost of overhead and expenses, they mercifully give the money back to our state as though it was theirs to give in the first place.

Doesn’t it make more sense to just do away with the middle-man and for us to just give the tax money directly to Texas instead of the feds in the first place? Who better than our own Texas legislators to decide what to do with Texans’ money to benefit Texas?

The same thing goes for the Department of Education, Health, etc… it just seems like a waste of resources to give the money to the federal government only to have them turn around and give it back to the originating states, conditional on obedience to the feds’ rules?

So anyway… I don’t think anything I said has anything to do with being Republican or Democrat, but still I think it may surprise many Republicans to hear any kind of gripe about taxes coming from a Dem. Am I missing something?
